SYLLABI ON THE HISTORY OF THE HUMANITIES

To support the development of the history of the humanities as a teachable field, we gather syllabi from relevant courses in this area. Here’s an overview of syllabi of courses on the History of the Humanities together with a few video’s for class room use. This overview will be updated regularly with new syllabi.

If you want your course to be included in this overview, send a message with your syllabus to historyofhumanities@uva.nl. Please keep in mind that we are interested in the (combined) history of humanistic disciplines such as art history, philology, musicology and literary studies, and not in the history of art, music and literature.

INSPIRATIONAL PITCHES

The Making of the Humanities XI in Lund included a roundtable discussion on the topic of teaching the history of the humanities: Is the History of the Humanities a Teachable Subject – and, If so, How?

The roundtable had two aims. First, it sought to take stock of members’ efforts to carve out spaces for teaching the history of the humanities, allowing them to share experiences and learn from each other. Secondly, the session aimed to provide those who do not yet engage in history of the humanities teaching, but might want to do so in the future, with inspiration, examples, and practical advice.

Below, we have provided recaps of the panelists 10-minute pitches from the roundtable, in which they reflect on their experiences, highlighting the challenges (didactic, administrative, or otherwise) that they have encountered and how they responded to them. Click the names to read the recaps.

Panel members:

Ku-ming Chang (Academia Sinica)
Kasper Risbjerg Eskildsen (Roskilde University)
Suzanne Marchand (Louisiana State University)
Herman Paul (Leiden University)
Rens Bod (University of Amsterdam)
